چکیده

We describe numerical simulations of spiral waves dynamics in the computational model of human atrial tissue with the Courtemanche-Ramirez-Nattel local kinetics. The spiral wave was initiated by cross-field stimulation protocol, with and without preliminary “fatigue” by rapid stimulation of the model tissue for a long time. In all cases the spiral wave has finite lifetime and self-terminates. However the mechanism of self-termination appears to depend on the initiation procedure. Spiral waves in the “fresh” tissue typically terminate after a few rotations via dissipation of the excitation front along the whole of its length. The dynamics of spiral waves in “tired” tissue is characterized by breakups and hypermeander, which also typically leads to selftermination but only after a much longer interval of time. Some features of the observed behaviour can not be explained using existing simplified theories of dynamic instabilities and alternanses.

Mechanisms for the Termination of Atrial Fibrillation by Localized Ablation: Computational and Clinical Studies.

BACKGROUND Human atrial fibrillation (AF) can terminate after ablating localized regions, which supports the existence of localized rotors (spiral waves) or focal drivers. However, it is unclear why ablation near a spiral wave tip would terminate AF and not anchor reentry. We addressed this question by analyzing competing mechanisms for AF termination in numeric simulations, referenced to clini...

A hybrid stimulation strategy for suppression of spiral waves in cardiac tissue

7 Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia whose me8 chanisms are thought to be mainly due to the self perpetuation of spiral waves 9 (SW). To date, available treatment strategies (antiarrhythmic drugs, radiofre10 quency ablation of the substrate, electrical cardioversion) to restore and to 11 maintain a normal sinus rhythm have limitations and are associated with AF 12 re...

Electro-mechanical dynamics of spiral waves in a discrete 2D model of human atrial tissue

We investigate the effect of mechano-electrical feedback and atrial fibrillation induced electrical remodelling (AFER) of cellular ion channel properties on the dynamics of spiral waves in a discrete 2D model of human atrial tissue. The tissue electro-mechanics are modelled using the discrete element method (DEM). Millions of bonded DEM particles form a network of coupled atrial cells represent...

Role of spiral wave pinning in inhomogeneous active media in the termination of atrial fibrillation by electrical cardioversion

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia to affect humans. One of the treatment modalities for atrial fibrillation is an electrical cardioversion. Electrical cardioversion can result in one of three outcomes: an immediate termination of arrhythmic activity, a delayed termination or unsuccessful termination. The mechanism of delayed termination is unknown. Here we present a mode...
